Vegan left upset after restaurant menu comes with ‘insulting’ note

A vegan diner was left feeling angry after finding an “insulting” note written by staff during a visit to a restaurant over the bank holiday weekend.

Lisa Cooney had been ordering food with family at Ravelston House in Edinburgh on Sunday, 30 May, when she requested the barman to identify which menu items were suitable for vegans.

After he returned with a menu full of circled items, Ms Cooney and her family spotted a note drop onto the floor.

It read “The vegan sh*** has been circled”, reports EdinburghLive.

The incident left Ms Cooney feeling “angry and upset” – and she later received an apology from the manager who agreed the note was unacceptable.

Ms Cooney said: “I dined today for lunch with family who are visiting for the weekend.

“I asked what options were vegan and the barman said he would ask the chef, he came back with the menu which had the items circled and he put the note on the bar, it fell from the bar and my dad picked it up and showed it to me.

“When I first read it I was in disbelief, then I was angry and upset, it’s insulting and so unprofessional, also the total disregard for any potential allergy is a worry.

“For a chef to have that mentality is quite shocking.

“I went and spoke to the manager after my family had finished their meal, he apologised and agreed the note wasn’t acceptable.”

After talking with staff, Ms Cooney added that an assistant manager spoke to her before she left and was “much more understanding” to the situation.

Ravelston House has been contacted for comment.
