The stars of Celebrity Gogglebox struggled through a news report about England’s Euro 2020 defeat – and some couldn’t bear to watch.
Friday’s episode showed the celebrities viewing a BBC bulletin aired the morning after Sunday night’s penalty shoot-out loss to Italy.
Broadcaster Jeremy Vine – watching with fellow presenter Snoochie Shy – told her: “I don’t want to hear the news, I don’t want to see the news…”
“Why not?” Snoochie asked. “I know what’s coming” he responded.
“Yeah, fair”, she conceded, as Jeremy sighed: “Oh blimey”.
Meanwhile DJ Roman Kemp – watching with dad Martin – had to look away.
“It’s a nightmare,” Martin agreed, when he asked if it was finished.
And the elder Kemp had some wise words: “We all feel a bit fed up now but in a year’s time we’ll be back out there again” – and the pair launched into a rendition of Three Lions.
Over at Clare Balding and Alice Arnold’s house, Clare said she was “so sad for the three who didn’t score”, adding: “They didn’t miss, they didn’t fail – they just didn’t score.”
The couple chatted about the ages of England’s young Lions and Italy – with some Italian players in their late 30s.
“They are young so they’ve got lots of years ahead of them,” Alice pointed out about England.
When Clare said one of the Italian players was 37, Alice joked: “Came out of his care home, onto the football pitch!”
The celebrities also discussed the racist abuse Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho faced after the game.
In south London, Mo – watching with Babatunde – said: “It’s that classic thing of like, if you’re doing well you’re English, if you’re not doing well you’re black.
Referring to the people who sent the players abuse, he added: “You have to be ashamed of yourself man, you really do.”
Celebrity Gogglebox is on Channel 4 on Fridays at 9pm.
