Gogglebox star Mary Cook has died, aged 92

Gogglebox star Mary Cook has died at the age of 92.

Channel 4 and Studio Lambert, the makers of Gogglebox, announced the sad news in a statement on behalf of her family.

Mary was on the show from 2016 alongside her best friend, Marina Wingrove.

The pair met while living at the St Monica Trust retirement village in Bristol over a decade ago and appeared together from one of their two homes.

Channel 4 tweeted the statement to its official Gogglebox account this morning.

“We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook passed away in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side,” the post read.

“Bristolians Mary & Marina met at St Monica Trust retirement village over ten years ago and have been together ever since.

“They joined Gogglebox in 2016 at the start of series eight and became instant fan favorites due to their brilliantly witty and often cheeky comments.

“She will be dearly missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew,” concluded the tweet.

Fans of Mary and Marina have flooded social media with their tributes.

One fan on Twitter said: “Very saddened to hear this, they were wonderful together, so cheeky and funny. Me and my wife will miss her presence on the show. Thank you Mary for keeping us all entertained.”

“This one really hurts. Rest in peace Mary you absolute legend,” another added.

Mary and Marina returned to the series earlier this year having been kept away from filming due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The new series of Gogglebox is set to begin in September.
