What happened to the original cast of Ground Force? Charlie Dimmock, Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh

It’s been more than 16 years since Ground Force stopped airing on the BBC – but we still remember the delight of seeing Alan, Charlie and Tommy on our screens.

In the popular show which ran for eight years, the trio would visit gardens in desperate need of attention to give them a complete makeover.

Launched in 1997, each week the team would travel to the garden of an individual nominated by a friend or family member.

Over two days while that person was away, the team, assisted by friends and family, made over the garden to surprise the individual on their return.

But what happened to the original presenters Alan Titchmarsh, Charlie Dimmock and Tommy Walsh after the show ended in 2005?

What does Charlie Dimmock do now?

Gardening expert Charlie Dimmock may have finished hosting Ground Force in 2005 but her television career in the horticulture world has continued.

After her eight-year stint on the show, she went on to present programmes such as The Joy of Gardening and later Charlie’s Garden Army.

She’s also presented coverage of and taken part in the Channel 4 reality TV show The Games.

Now horticulture fans can find Charlie, now 55, presenting BBC series alongside the Rich brothers.

The experts descend on gardens badly in need of a makeover and compete against each other to build the homeowners’ dream gardens.

Alan Titchmarsh was the centrepiece of the presenting trio on Ground Force with a wealth of gardening expertise behind him.

The MBE-awarded presenter continued to be involved in gardening shows after he quit Ground Force in 2002.

He presented Gardeners’ World and two series of How To Be A Gardener, as well as spells aways from horticulture presenting Songs of Praise and a series of BBC Radio Four programmes.

In recent years Alan has spent more time away from television screens and radio microphones, focusing instead on his career as a novelist.

Now 72, Alan’s most recent television appearance was in spring 2021 presenting Alan Titchmarsh: Spring Into Summer on ITV.

Builder Tommy Walsh became famous for his practicality on Ground Force – but now his attention has turned to homes.

Tommy, now 64, has taken on presenting the new series of Homes Under the Hammer , alongside designer Jacqui Joseph, scouring Britain to find properties for sale.

Alongside Ground Force, Tommy took on a separate series in the early 2000s called Challenge Tommy Walsh.

Later in 2009, he also took on the role of helping (and often saving) DIY enthusiasts with ‘Tommy’s Fix Your House For Free’.
