Horror stay at Scarborough Grand Hotel with ‘wine like rocket fuel’ and ‘water pouring into room’

A woman says Scarborough’s Grand Hotel is the “worst she has had” in her 60 years of travelling after staying in the “gross” hotel.

Ros Dickens was celebrating her recovery from a brain haemorrhage with a trip around the UK in 2018 with her friend.

They had booked all the accommodation in advance and were not expecting anything fancy as they were only looking to stay in basic but comfortable and clean rooms, Yorkshire Live reported.

However, the horror that awaited Ros at the Scarborough hotel was “like nothing she has ever experienced before”.

She said: “Over the years I’ve stayed at lots of different hotels, but I’ve never stayed anywhere so gross as The Grand. It was the worst accommodation we had during the whole trip.

“The building was ‘crumbling’ and just went she thought they could not mess up the breakfast, she was served food she would not ‘expect from prison’.

“The first room we were allocated had water pouring through the bathroom ceiling, when we went to reception the staff just seemed as though they’d lost their enthusiasm”.

Ros said that they were allocated another room, which was also very unpleasant but was at least dry and they had hoped that their problems would end there.

However, when the pair went down for their evening meal Ros said that she was confronted by a sight that was “like nothing I have ever experienced”.

Ros, from Plymouth, and her friend had not been permitted to eat in the main dining hall, as they had booked their stay through a deal provider, so the pair were sent downstairs for their meals.

Ros said: “When we got down to the lower floor it was just like nothing I’ve ever experienced actually, in my mind they were serving slop – it didn’t even look like real food, it just looked…I don’t know, I don’t even think they’d give that sort of food in a prison environment.

“Also, before we sat down, we told them that we had a bottle of wine with our meal and they just produced a bottle of opened wine, not corked or anything, and gave it to us.

“When we tried the wine it was just like rocket fuel, it was just undrinkable, it was really undrinkable.”

Still determined not to be beaten by the experience, Ros and her friend tried once more to salvage their hotel experience the following morning at breakfast – but said that this was as inedible as the previous evening’s meal.

“Normally you can’t do much wrong with a breakfast, I’ve normally got a brilliant appetite and I love being away and eating a cooked breakfast because it’s a treat, but I seriously could not even eat the toast there, it was just inedible”, Ros said.

She added: “I was hungry from the night before and thought you can’t go too wrong with toast, but even that was just awful.”

Ros said that she felt compelled to come forward with her experience of The Grand after reading YorkshireLive ‘s recent coverage of the hotel.

And she said that she and her friend still laugh about their time at the hotel all these years later.

Beautiful Scarborough

“A memory popped up when I saw the recent story about it and I thought ‘oh God’ because my friend and I often joke about The Grand Hotel”, Ros said.

She added: “I’m one of nine and I grew up in a council flat, so it’s not like I’m used to anything that special, though I do like to stay in nice spaces but I’m quite easily pleased generally.

“That was the only hotel that I had a complaint about, because even the most basic places we stayed it was absolutely fine. When we got there we had a rude awakening, we came down with a big bump.”
