13million UK households have never switched energy provider

New research has revealed that more than 13million UK households have never switched energy providers, but if they made the move to a green energy supplier, they could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30.5 million tonnes.

With the UK residential sector responsible for 15% of the country’s carbon emissions – people are increasingly aware of the impact personal choices can make with nearly 50% of households looking for ways to help reduce their carbon footprint.

Customers switching to Octopus Energy could reduce their carbon emissions by the equivalent of planting up to 287 trees. So far, Octopus Energy’s 2.4 million UK customers have saved around 2.4 billion kilos of carbon, the equivalent of the work of planting 1.19 billion trees.

To encourage more people to make the move, Virgin Red and Octopus Energy have launched a promotion to win a year’s worth of free energy with Octopus Energy.

Members who switch their energy supplier to Octopus Energy before Sunday, November 21, via the Virgin Red app or web will be in with a chance of winning a year of free energy, as well as earning up to 7,400 Virgin Points. There are also 125,000 worth of Virgin Points prizes that will be distributed as runner up prizes.

Charlotte Sjoberg, spokesperson at Virgin Red, said: “Price, plus making environmental decisions, are the top reasons bill-payers look to switch energy providers, but still, one in four have never switched or haven’t switched for 10 years or more. Virgin Red is now giving members an added incentive, with up to 7,400 Virgin Points up for grabs if they switch to Octopus Energy – a points boost which would cover a meal for two at Raymond Blanc’s White Brasserie, and a boost for the environment by changing to a more renewable energy provider.”

Michael Cottrell, spokesperson at Octopus Energy, said: “Octopus Energy is making green energy affordable around the world by combining technology with outrageously good customer service. More than 2.4 million UK homes have already made the switch, and we couldn’t be happier that record numbers of people are ditching fossil fuels. It’s exciting to be partnering with another great British trailblazer in Virgin, and to be working together to deliver net-zero sooner. ”

The research was commissioned by Virgin’s rewards club, Virgin Red.
