Woman makes life-changing decision after new husband’s ‘red flags’

A Beverley woman shocked fans when she decided to stay committed to her new husband, despite expressing her concerns about a number of ‘red flags’.

Marilyse Corrigan, who is appearing in the latest series of Married at First Sight, surprised fans when she made the decision to stay married to husband Franky Spencer, in the final commitment ceremony on Tuesday night’s episode.

Viewers had been upset and angered at the way Marilyse, from Beverley, was treated by her new husband the previous night.

It came as the couples each received anonymous letters from other cast members – with some brutal home truths. Read more about what happened here.

And following the explosive encounter at the Married at First Sight dinner party, Tuesday’s episode picked up the very next day, where the couples discussed what had happened the night before.

The latest episode also centred mainly around the final commitment ceremony with the seven couples deciding if they are “all in” or “all out” and if they were leaving or staying.

Discussing what had happened at the dinner party, Marilyse told Franky: “It wasn’t a bad letter. It was an honest letter and you were just like criticising everything that was in it.”

“Of course, defending myself,” Franky pointed out.

“It is a little bit embarrassing,” she continued. “And then, after the letter was read, you turned around and said to me ‘when I’m talking, don’t speak’. Why would you say that to me?”

Franky explained: “Because I was just a bit annoyed at the time. It was a reaction that was absolutely wrong and I want to say I am sorry for that.”

“Franky, you’ve spent half the time here speaking over the top of me,” Marilyse told him.

“Half the time?” he interrupted.

And ahead of the commitment ceremony, Marilyse revealed she was unsure about how she was feeling about Franky.

“Today I feel really deflated,” she said. “When I first started getting to know Franky, I was really a bit blind to his real personality that he can be a bit overpowering and a bit abrupt. So I don’t know how I feel about him right now.”

She later told other contestants: “This week’s been a bit rocky. We had a little ding dong at the dinner table.

“He just said something like ‘when I’m talking, don’t talk’. I don’t want him to speak to me like that in front of my kids because that would just be totally wrong. So I have been a bit unsure about how I feel.”

But when it came down to it, she made the decision to stay – but not before discussing what had happened at the dinner party with the experts.

“It’s probably been the hardest week so far,” Marilyse told the panel of experts. “He has been a bit up and down but he has tried to keep positive and keep happy.”

Speaking about the letter read out at the dinner party, Franky said: “To say that I need to open up more. That was like three weeks ago. I opened up a lot to Marilyse and that is the most important thing.”

Answering about being “defensive”, Franky added: “I was cracking jokes wasn’t I? It was light-hearted, having a laugh.”

And Marilyse told the experts: “I think that [the letter] was people’s initial look of Franky when they first met him. And that is what the letter did actually say – ‘at first, we did feel like you two were a mismatch’. I know it was more aimed at Franky than it was myself so I do get why Franky got a bit upset.

“Someone saying that Marilyse and I are a mismatch, that’s a dig. A bit of a low blow,” Franky said.

He told the experts: “Of course, I am going to defend out relationship because Marilyse means a lot to me.”

“Yeah, but you need to not take it like that Franky,” Marilyse told him. “We have had this conversation before we even went to the dinner party. Don’t take everything so negatively.”

After discussing the dinner party in further detail with each other and the experts, it was then time to make their decision – to stay or leave.

Franky revealed his decision first.

“We’ve had another week of getting stronger and knowing each other, so I would like to stay,” he said.

Marilyse said: “So for me, it was harder because it was the hardest week. I had a couple of red flags. I don’t want to be spoken to like that at all but I have decided to stay because I don’t give up that easily.”

After taking their seats, Marilyse asked him: “Are you p***** off with me?”

“No. I’m all good,” he told her.

Taking to Twitter, fans of the show were clearly not happy with Marilyse’s decision to “stay”.

“Can’t stop thinking about Marilyse staying with Franky,” one Tweeted. “How many more red flags do you need pal.”

Another said: “Stay??!! Marilsye please! You said you saw red flags and you’re even asking him if he’s p***** off at you after saying stay. Girl please leave this man.”

A third added: Marilyse it was definitely your time to leave tonight! But you just want to ignore the red flags waving in your face.”

Viewers also got a glimpse into the next episode, where the couples take part in home stays.

“Sooo Marilyse decided to stay… New prediction: Franky meets her kids, they don’t like him,” one Tweeted.

The next episode of Married at First Sight will air tonight at 9pm on E4.
