Strictly Come Dancing stars Gorka Marquez and John Whaite spill the beans on ‘the curse’

Gorka Marquez and John Whaite talked the Strictly curse, latest gossip on the show and what really happens in rehearsals.

In a segment on Steph’s Packed Lunch, John spoke about his score of 39 with partner Johannes Radebe on Saturday’s live show.

Speaking to presenter Steph McGovern, he said he was ‘scared’ because he feels there is ‘no where to go now’ after being top of the leaderboard for his Pirate’s of the Caribbean Paso Doble.

He revealed how he and Johannes have said from week one that they will not worry about the scores and just focus on their performances.

This weekend the pair will be dancing an American Smooth/Foxtrot to a George Michael song – but John didn’t let slip on which one.

However, he did confess the song he would be dancing to was one of his and his partner’s favourite song.

He said: “It’s a song that me and Paul used to listen to in the car and sing when we first met each other, so it’s a beautiful song.”

Strictly pro dancer Gorka was also a guest on the Channel 4 show. He and partner Katie McGlynn were eliminated from Strictly on Sunday after being in the bottom two for the second week running.

Steph asked whether he thought they’d had enough rehearsal time with Katie’s busy Hollyoaks filming schedule.

Gorka said: “The show is very demanding. As many hours you can do the better, because there are so many things to think about . Especially with someone like Katie who hadn’t danced before.

“Even if she had two hours, she used to come with positive energy. She used to practice on her breaks… but it’s true not having a lot of time it’s difficult. You need to practice 8 to 10 hours a day.”

The pair also spilled the gossip on the Strictly curse and talked about the rumoured sparks between dancing partners Kai and AJ.

Asking Gorka her thoughts he said: “Nothing, from what I know they’re just good friends, they’re just dancing together. That’s what you want people to see (the chemistry). They were selling a love story, The Bodyguard. You want people to believe it. If they’re doing that, then their job is great. So I think it’s just a performance.”

Gemma Atkinson – Gorka’s fiancée and former Strictly contestant – was also on the show and joked: “They said we were getting together and we weren’t, so don’t believe everything!”

Gorka said: “For me, I know there is a lot of rumours about the Strictly curse. I can guarantee you, for all of us, it’s a job and we know we have to get into character.”

John added that when you spend that much time with your dance partner you see them ‘for warts and all’.

He said: “I think I’ve burped in Johannes face, I might have even farted at one point. There is no attraction, because you see everything, sweat and everything.”

The show’s ‘lunch mates’ were able to ask questions to Gorka, Gemma and John about the Strictly experience.

One lunch mate asked John how he found learning the routines as a non-professional dancer.

He replied: “It’s really quite daunting. It’s like learning an alphabet, it’s like learning a new language, at first it’s very very scary but as you start to recognise bits you become more proud of yourself.”

Watch Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One on Saturday at 7pm and Steph’s Packed Lunch airs weekdays at 12.30pm on Channel 4.
