First picture released of new Channel 4 prison drama featuring star of Derry Girls

A picture preview of the cast from the new drama Screw has been released ahead of its launch next year.

The Channel 4 prison drama has been filmed in Glasgow and is set to be released in early 2022.

Among the cast of the six-part series is Jamie-Lee O’Donnell from Derry Girls and Nina Sosanya known for roles in His Dark Materials and Last Tango in Halifax.

Viewers will be introduced to the staff of C Wing working in a busy men’s prison and can expect humour, emotional high stakes and plenty of danger for both the officers and prisoners.

Channel 4 has said it will show ‘life in prison as never before seen on British television’.

The drama from STV Studios has been written by BAFTA-nominated writer Rob Williams, who’s best known for writing BBC’s four-part series The Victim featuring Kelly Macdonald.

He was inspired to write the drama after gaining experience of working and volunteering in prison.

Screw is said to tackle contemporary stories ‘head on’ but will also feature comedy, irreverence and heart.

Following the cast announcement earlier this year, Channel 4’s Head of Drama, Caroline Hollick said: “Screw offers the audience an insight in to the challenges and struggles faced behind bars for both prisoners and officers; told with humour, humanity and hope.

“I’m so excited for our brilliant, distinctive cast, led by the superlative Nina Sosanya, and I hope Jamie-Lee O’Donnell’s dramatic new role will her see fast becoming an iconic face of Channel 4.”

The full synopsis for the drama reads: “At the head of our group of embattled prison officer ‘screws’ is Leigh (Nina Sosanya – His Dark Materials, Little Birds) a woman who has devoted her entire adult life to this prison and its population.

“Leigh keeps her inmates in line and has their backs when they need it. But she is an enigma to her team, and has her own secrets that if discovered could cost her more than her job.

“Into the pressure cooker of Long Marsh Prison enters Rose (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell – Derry Girls), a 21 year old trainee officer. It’s a baptism of fire even for this street smart young woman.

“She joins fellow screws Ali (Faraz Ayub – Line of Duty, Bodyguard), Gary (Stephen Wight – I May Destroy You, Manhunt), Don (Ron Donachie – Titanic, Game of Thrones), and Jackie (Laura Checkley- King Gary, Detectorists).”

Screw is coming to Channel 4 and All 4 in early 2022.
