Northerners are officially funnier than Southerners

Northerners are officially thought to be funnier than Southerners, according to almost half (49 per cent) of the nation.

Research commissioned by The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience delved into the nation’s attitudes to British humour, as 59 per cent admit there’s nothing quite like it.

This is down to our enjoyment of sarcasm (44 per cent), the ability to not take ourselves too seriously (39 per cent) and having a dry sense of humour (37 per cent).

Nearly half (46 per cent) think you can only truly understand the British sense of humour once you’ve spent a good amount of time in the UK.

With attractions in both London and Manchester, The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience is pitting Northerners against Southerners to find the best jokes for its new Halloween show.

Guests will be encouraged to find their inner comedian to try and make their Maze Masters laugh with the best gags.

Brits ooze confidence when it comes to telling jokes, 14 per cent of Brits think they’re hilarious and 17 per cent reckon they could do stand-up comedy.

The research also reveals that 22 per cent of Britons find their friends hilarious and 17 per cent say their partner is the funniest person they know.

Over a quarter (27 per cent) say they know loads of people who are convinced they’re hilarious when they tell dreadful jokes.

But despite this, over a third (34 per cent) of the 1,500 Britons polled admit they can’t help but laugh at bad one-liners and puns.

The worst jokes still make us laugh, whilst 46 per cent of Brits say they think it’s important to laugh more with each other as the COVID-19 pandemic eases.

The worst joke league table (that still makes us chuckle)

  1. How did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side
  2. What’s a ghost’s favourite dessert? I-SCREAM
  3. When is a door not a door? When it’s ajar
  4. Can you put the bins out? I didn’t know they were on fire
  5. What do you call cheese which isn’t yours? Nacho cheese

Tom Lionetti-Maguire, CEO & Founder of Little Lion Entertainment Limited, said: “As the research found over half of Brits polled (53 per cent) say the UK is home to some of the best comedy in the world, so this Halloween we’re challenging guests to bring back the humour and join us with their best jokes.”
