Earlier this week, I tried the new McDonald’s vegan burger, aptly named the ‘McPlant’.
McDonald’s have released this new burger in collaboration with Beyond Meat, a leading producer of plant-based meat alternatives.

The McPlant contains a plant-based patty made from pea protein and a vegan cheese slice derived from coconut oil.
The decision to release the burger comes in the wake of a huge increase in demand for vegan products, given their substantially lower environmental footprint when compared to meat.
To break it down, the McPlant contains a plant-based patty, vegan sandwich sauce, ketchup, mustard, onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato, and a vegan alternative to cheese in a sesame seed bun.
My first thought when I opened the box was ‘wow, they really throw these things together don’t they’. The presentation left a bit to be desired, but that goes for everything on the McDonald’s menu.
My second thought was the smell – the smell was very good. Meaty and McDonaldsy. No breadcrumb-coated vegetables here!
Time to tuck in!
The taste was very good. Not just in terms of the flavour, but in how much it tasted like any other McDonald’s.
A lot of people don’t realise how much of the taste of a burger comes from the other components, such as the bun, the salad, the sauces.
The plant-based patty offers both the smokey flavour of a normal meat patty, as well as the all-important texture, that ties the burger together into something that is indistinguishable from a regular cheeseburger at McDonald’s.
And when all is said and done, what better endorsement is there for a vegan burger than that?
I’m sure a lot of you will be reading this article and violently smashing your keyboards with comments such as: “Why would a vegan want to eat something that tastes like meat?” and “bacon lol”, so let me explain.
The McPlant is a vegan option for people who enjoy the taste of meat, but disagree with the ethics of its production and the adverse affect it is having on the environment.
Over 70 billion farm animals are killed every year for food, while animal agriculture is responsible for almost 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions – more than all of the cars driven around the world combined.
The McPlant is a tasty and convenient option for people who follow a plant-based diet, and is definitely worth a try, even if you think veganism is a load of nonsense.
Why not taste one for yourself? You might even enjoy it!
